What Kind of Education is Required for a Forensic Anthropologist?

You have seen them on your favorite Bones or CSI TV show. They are the criminalists who study bones collected from a crime scene. They are the forensic anthropologists. Have you ever wondered what a forensic anthropologist does and what the educational requirements are to become one?

If you have a knack for the biological sciences, anthropology, archaeology, and history, then the field of forensic anthropology may be the career choice for you. It will be part of your job to help medical examiners or coroners with the gathering and identifying of human remains. You must know how to determine biological profiles such as age, sex, race, height, etc. of skeletal remains. It is your job to determine the cause of trauma to the skeleton. You may have to visit the burial site, help dig it up, and scrutinize soft tissue or skeletal remains with the intent of identifying the dead person and helping to ascertain the approximate time and cause of death.

It takes a great deal of education to prepare to become a forensic anthropologist. You need a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, anatomy, physiology, or anthropology, and a graduate-level degree in anthropology or human biology. Then you need a PhD and a minimum of three years of experience in forensic anthropology before applying to the board to become board certified.

You can still work in this field even if you do not have the required education. However, many forensic laboratory employers will favor your application if you have a doctoral level degree. Once you get a job as a forensic anthropologist, you will work at big universities as a consultant to medical examiners and courts.

Experts such as forensic anthropologists use their varied educational background to help solve a crime. Their efforts help bring an offender to justice and bring closure to the families of the victims.

Tenovir/Emtricitabine/Efavirenz (Atripla)

All three, Efavirenz, Emtricitabine, and Tenofovir are each approved for the treatment of HIV. Efavirenz and Emtricitabine have also be approved for use in children who are infected with HIV.  These three medicines are frequently prescribed together, the manufacturers have combined them into one tablet. Atripla, approved by the FDA in July 2006, is a combination tablet for the treatment of HIV. Atripla may be used as a complete regimen or in combination with other HIV medications.

This has made Atripla a leading medication in the battle against HIV and has help simplifiy HIV regimens a great deal. This helps to make dealing with HIV simplier and the drug regimens more effective because it reduces forgotten doses. This reduces the number of drug resistant mutations that can occur.

Atripla does not cure or prevent HIV infection or HIV and does not reduce the risk of passing the virus to other people. Along with its desired effects, Atripla can cause some unwanted effects. More serious side effects of Efavirenz are confusion, depression, abnormal thinking, hallucinations, memory loss, thoughts of suicide, and paranoid thinking. Some people can develop a bad rash. The NRTIs in Atripla can cause a sometimes fatal lactic acidosis and liver disease as well as blood problems or muscle weakness. Your doctor should be notified if you experience joint pain or muscle pain and trouble breathing, weakness, stomach pain with nausea or vomiting, feeling cold, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, jaundice, dark urine or loss of appetite. Indivduals who have these side effects should tell their doctor. Often side effects that are not as serious generally lessen with continued use of Atripla. Patients should notify their doctor if side effects continue or worsen. If you have hepatitis B and you stop taking Atripla it can cause a severe reaction.

Keeping the Body Balanced Through Chakra Meditation

Meditation is considered as a powerful form of self-realization and self-healing. There are various methods by which you can meditate, but perhaps, the most potent of all is the Chakra Meditation. This process can also be called chakra balancing or chakra healing.

Chakra Meditation; A Primer

Chakra Meditation is the art of balancing and energizing all the seven energy centers in the body, called Chakras, in order to align the flow of energy through them. Heres a brief description of these seven energy centers, or the Chakras:

*Crown Chakra is situated at the top of the head. It is related to the thought element, which governs our wisdom, knowledge, and consciousness.

*Orange Chakra governing your emotions and sexuality is located at the center of abdomen and related to the element Water.

*Solar Plexus or Power Chakra located just above the naval region and related to the element Fire. It governs our will power, autonomy, and metabolism.

*Heart Chakra located at the center of the chest and related to the element Air. It governs love, compassion, and relationships in our lives.

*Power Chakra, also called the Solar Plexus, is situated just above the naval region. It is related to the Fire element, which governs our will power, metabolism, and autonomy.

*Orange Chakra, also called the Naval or Sacral Chakra, is situated at the center of abdomen. It is related to the Water element, which governs our sexuality and emotions.

*Crown Chakra governing your wisdom and knowledge is located at the top of the head and related to the element thought.

A concentrated mind working towards the achievement of synchronized movements of these seven Chakras in the body can truly bring incalculable rewards in ones life. The body, mind, and soul would become stress-free and youll emerge as a better-informed human being who can easily see the spiritual side to every materialistic possession in this world. One can also achieve natural healing for bodily and mental ailments just by bringing the seven energy centers in consonance with each other.

Chakra Meditation Techniques

Chakra Meditation is the sum total of the following three techniques:

*Grounding Technique. As is evident from its name, the Grounding Technique makes your body feel connected with the Earth. The application of this technique is pretty simple. Just visualize a root growing from your body and entering into the Earth. Easier it may sound, but requires intense concentration and mental awareness while performing the Grounding Technique.

*Centering Technique refers to the process whereby, your body gets prepared to receive the benefits of Chakra Meditation. The actual step involves taking 3-5 deep breaths. And visualization involves the assumption of feeling of relaxation of every body part from toe to head by tightening and relaxing each body part starting from toe, and moving in the northwards direction, till the head. The final act is the visualization of the act of centering a pot on a pottery wheel.

*Relaxation Technique, which is the final step in Chakra Meditation. There is no hard and fast rule to relax your body. Everyone has his or her own method of relaxation.

One of the popular methods of Chakra Meditation is detailed below:

*Sit or lie down comfortably.

*Every stress-causing factor should be addressed and effort should be made to reduce or eliminate the stress as far as possible. Start with loosening the clothing you are wearing. Identify other similar straining factors and eliminate them. And finally, close your eyes.

*Breathe in a relaxed manner, which is neither too fast nor too slow. Let the breath come naturally!

*Start feeling every part of your body from toe to the head in that direction. While your eyes are closed, feel the earth you are lying or sitting on, or the bed you are lying or sitting on, feel the aura around you, feel the clothes you are wearing. Feel everything youd have had your eyes been open. Visualize life in darkness!

*All the negative thoughts and emotions should not be avoided. Let them be! With time and regular practice, these thoughts will disappear automatically. Rather, when no such negative emotion disturbs you, that is the time when you should consider that you have perfected the art of Chakra Meditation.

*Feel every subtle inner detail and let your awareness travel freely from one body part to the other.

Do this exercise for any length of time and at any time of the day!

How to Choose the Right Type of Science Fair Project

Science fair projects can be the most memorable part of your science class, giving you an opportunity to show your abilities and creativity. Sometimes, it is hard just to get started on your science fair project. Before you can plan your project, and even before you pick a topic, you must first understand the different types of science fair projects. It’s very important to choose the right type of project, or all of your effort could be wasted.

There are three basic types of science fair projects: models, demonstrations, or investigations. When choosing, there are two considerations. First, it’s important to check with your teacher to find out what type of project is required. Second, if you get to choose which type of project to do, pick the kind you find most interesting.

The Model Building Method

The model building method is the kind of project which, as the name implies, enables you to construct a model, to scale whenever possible, to illustrate a specific scientific principle. This could be as simple as a model of the solar system, or a real working machine. Many of us have seen the model of an erupting volcano in which the chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar causes realistic looking ‘lava’ flows down the sides of a ‘mountain’. These models can be fun to build and quite spectacular – but they are often more suited to elementary school science fairs because of the relative lack of real ’science’ or creativity in most of them. Having said that, though, there can be some spectacular models produced by higher grade level students; especially if the model is actually demonstrating something new.

The Demonstration

The demonstration or descriptive method of research is again fairly self-explanatory. You could display your collection of rocks or other items related to a particular topic (like geology), and describe how they are related in your report, speech or on a display board. As an alternative, you could use a visual project display board to describe the research you performed. These kinds of projects are simply an illustration or explanation of known scientific principles.

The Scientific Experiment (Investigation)

It is with the third of the possible methods that you can provide what most science fairs for older students are looking for – proper scientific experiments using scientific methods to construct and test a hypothesis and draw conclusions from it. If you have ambitions in science, or want to progress to regional or even national science fairs, then this is the area that you really should be looking into. And the choice of science fair project topics is limitless. Decide where your major interest lies – it might be biology, chemistry or physics but it could also be earth science, environmental science, sports science, meteorology or computer science – and then try to develop your own hypothesis and method of testing it. If you have trouble thinking of an interesting topic, books and web sites can offer helpful ideas. Just make sure it is unique is some way if you want a chance of winning.

Finally, to assure your success, always remain in contact with your teacher about what you are doing, and confirm that you fully understand the science fair rules and guidelines. Then, whichever type of project you decide to undertake, you can enjoy it with confidence!
