What laptop should I get for audio editing and some video game performance for US$1100?
Hello! I am planning to study sound engineering and I need a laptop that I can use for my school (and hopefully in the future, work) projects. Since this is my first laptop purchase ever, and I'm selling my desktop to help fund for it, I want it to have some desktop-replacement quality.
I don't really need a souped-up video game machine (for US$1100, who am I kidding anyway), but I want it to be able to keep up with current and near-future video game hardware requirements. The audio editing part is most important though. Do I need a separate sound card to do audio work, like midi sequencing, basic recording and the like?
I'm currently torn between the Dual-core incarnations of the HP Pavilion and the Gateway MX. Which is better? Do you suggest any other laptop out there?
Thanks! ![]()
Here is a great laptop from Compusa.com, they are almost sold out! A great price too, except I would upgrade the Video Card and RAM (double it at least).
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?pfp=BROWSE&N=200334+502365&Ne=502360&product_code=329133&Pn=Pavilion_zd8220us_Notebook#ts
Compare this laptop (Pavilion zd8220us Notebook) to these other ones (Pavilion dv6113us Notebook, Pavilion dv8408us Notebook, Pavilion dv2130us Notebook). These last three almost don't compare except for dv6113us which has twice the Bus Speed than the zd8220us (1.6 GHz vs. 800 MHz). But 800 MHz is better than 667 MHz or 533 MHz. But you should notice that even though the dv6113us has 1.6 GHz Bus Speed, it only has 2 x 256 KB L2 Cache Size. Once again, going back to the processor, it is a single core, but with HT, and it's twice as fast as the other two, bigger screen, and Bluetooth capability as well. So with the one this one's priced, you can upgrade it, and get yourself some accessories, as well! Hard Drive speed is kinda slow, but you can get that upgraded as well. Anyhow make up your mind fast. Read the reviews, don't blame me if I didn't point somethings out. And oh yea, I win! Again!
I WANT TO BECOME A SOUND ENGINEER BUT… ?
i love music and sound. i play guitar and piano in a band. but the real question is, what are some requirements to be a sound engineer, like i am horrible in math, i am a junior in high school but still in algebra, and how long is a career like that suppose to take. and does any know were i can find more info about this
to be a sound engineer, you must be inclined to be one so that whatever happen on your study, ur persistence in finishing your course is still present. If you know how to analyze basic problems, then, you can be good in math yourself. Besides, an engineer is all about analysis and not only figures. You will enjoy analyzing figures if you know the principles governing them. An engineer is about 4-5 years.. internet is a good place to find for infos… try searching for Engineering. A field in engineering that is near to sound engineering is Electrical Engineering and Electronics and communication engineering… hope this helps
Chemical Engineering???
I'm currently a bio major at Boston College, which doesn't have an engineering school. Since I don't want to become a doctor, there's little much else I can do with a bio degree unless I get a Phd, which I don't have the time or money for.
So I've been looking into chemical engineering since it sounds pretty interesting. I want a career working for the environment in some way, and with a chemical engineering degree, I'd be able to do that in some way or another (right???)
I'm going to be a sophmore in september and I need to know VERY SOON if I should sign up for summer classes so I can meet the requirements to transfer to an engineering school.
My question is: how difficult is a chemical engineering degree compared to biology? compared to chemistry? What are some good engineering schools for chemical engineering, especially in relation to the environment/perhaps alternative energy?????
Well for chemical engineering, you must be able to nail down the per. table and ions. Much more is weighted on advanced physics and chemistry. Prepare for a substantial amount of studying. As for best schools, I recommend Cal tech. Cal tech has a great graduates program in chemical engineering. If you would like to go somewhere nearby, go to MIT. MIT is in Boston also, with degrees in alt. energy manufacturing and research. It all up to you however.
Becoming A Sound Engineer?
I’m interested in becoming a sound engineer when I graduate high school. What would you major in, in college to become one?
And can you give me any sort of information you know about this, I have a general idea what it actually is, but can you explain in detail what exactly you do, what kind of money do you make, is it a good career to get into?
Thanks in advance for your help. =)
Haley, it’s more than just music.
An audio (or sound) engineer does lots of different things all having to do with recording audio for playback. That’s the easiest definition I can give without a lot of technical jargon.
Frankly, unless you’ve had a burning desire to do this for quite a while (and from the sound of your post, you don’t), I’m not sure it’s something you want to pursue. Most kids in HS who want to pursue a career in this field have been very involved in it for years.
Most start when young by playing with toys that are unique: like building transistor radio sets, playing with tape and/or digital recorders and harrassing their friends constantly to help them record stuff and add effects to it during playback. This is not the usual kid.
Those who get into the field also have very analytical minds and a high degree of interest in science, electronics, higher math (like the stuff they do on scientific and graphing calculators), computers, etc. And, they’ve been taking things apart and putting them successfully back together since they were little kids. Is that you?
If that’s not you, it might be best to do a thorough research project on it before making any hard, firm decisions. A simple web search will help you out. If you don’t already know how to do fairly complicated searches on the internet, I’m going to say you won’t make a great candidate for audio engineering.
Don’t mean to burst your bubble, you may decide you absolutely want to do this – but check it out first.
Good luck no matter your decision.

Do you need to be good at Math to become a soung engineer?
I hate math, i have never been good at it, i will be going to school to be a sound engineer, will i have a problem because im not fond of Math?
Since you ask, you must have an idea…..Best to check the course outline for your specific answers.
Don't scoff at maths. They help you determine if your paycheck is correctly calculated.
